Bernie & Phyl’s Furniture Donates Over 100 Bedspreads to Local Furniture Banks

Norton, MA, February 27, 2006 — Bernie & Phyl’s Furniture recently donated over 100 bedspreads to two local furniture banks, the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless Furniture Bank in Lynn and the Central Mass Housing Alliance Donations Clearing House in Worcester. The bedspreads, which had previously been used in furniture displays in Bernie & Phyl’s stores, will be given free to any person in need of a warm blanket. This donation is one of many that Bernie & Phyl’s regularly makes to organizations serving needy populations across the region.

“When we decided to replace all of the bedspreads in our stores, we thought it would also be a great opportunity to help people in need,” said Bernie Rubin, co-founder and chairman of Bernie & Phyl’s Furniture. “We are happy that our bedspreads will not only keep people warm, but will help make people’s housing accommodations seem more like a home.”
Through its Donations Assistance Program, the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless provides thousands of families making the transition from homelessness into permanent housing with furniture and household goods free of charge. Since 1985, the Donations Clearing House has provided free donated furniture and household goods to over a 1,000 families per year who have been referred by area shelters, neighborhood centers, and health and human service agencies.

On behalf of the Children’s Advocacy Center of Suffolk County, I would like to thank you and Bernie & Phyl’s for your generous donation of an ottoman, sofa and coffee table. Dear Ms. Blumenthal:

Ms. Amy Blumenthal
Blumenthal Associates
101 Wolcott Street
Chestnut Hill, Ma 02467

Dear Ms. Blumenthal,
I am writing on behalf of the Boston Public Health Commission to thank you and Bernie and Phyl’s Furniture for the kind donation of two bureaus to one of the low income families in our Healthy Homes programs. As you know, this family was in the process of relocating due to unsanitary and over crowded conditions in their apartment. These conditions were exacerbating their young son’s asthma, causing him frequent hospitalizations and emergency room visits. Now, thanks to your generosity, the family has been moved to a renovated two bedroom apartment with two new pest-free bureaus to store their clothes.

An inspector on my staff recently visited the family and was commenting on how beautiful the dressers are. I know the family is thrilled arid appreciates your donation. I also want to thank your assistant Naomi for her role in coordinating the delivery of the furniture.

Very truly yours,
Emily M. Litonjua

Bernie and Phyllis Rubin
Bernie and Phyl’s Furniture
308 East Main Street
Norton, MA 02766

Dear Bernie and Phyllis:
I am writing to thank you for your support of the Partnership for a Drug-Free America and our local alliance, Massachusetts Partners in Prevention. Your involvement in the recent schedule of anti-drug messages on WHDH-TV is a huge step in our efforts to keep the kids of the greater Boston area drug-free.

Though I now live in Maryland, I was raised in Newton. I have received calls ftom friends and relatives in the Boston area to let me know that they saw the anti-drug spots that you tagged. Your personal endorsement, by appearing on camera at the front of the ads is appreciated.
As I am sure you know, a toll-free phone number appears at the end of the commercials to provide a resource for those in crisis or folks who are requesting information. Several people have actually called the toll-free number to voice their appreciation of Bernie and Phyl’s commitment to airing these messages.

It has been a pleasure working with Suzanne Hassett at Channel 7. She did an excellent job in ensuring significant exposure for your messages. Together, Bernie and Phyl’s, WHDH-TV, the Massachusetts Partners in Prevention and the Partnership for a Drug-Free America are making a difference.

Sincerely,

Chestnut Hill, MA 02467

Dear Ms. Shore:
Thank you for your wonderful donation of a $25 gift certificate for Father Bill’s Place 12th Annual Food Fest & Auction. This is our largest fund-raising effort of the year and we appreciate your support. We realize you receive many requests for assistance throughout the year and are honored that you have chosen to help us. While it seems almost tto trite to say, it is none-the-less true; we couldn’t do it without you! This year our Food Fest & Auction generated more than $330,000.00 to benefit Father Bill’s Place.

We value your faith in us and the work we accomplish on a daily basis. The funds raised through this endeavor will assist us in not only providing the basics such as emergency shelter, but the many “wrap-around” services available at Father Bill’s Place such as mental health counseling, substance abuse intervention, health care, housing search & placement, employment & benefits assistance, and supportive case management. Providing these services, and seeking to make housing available by our own efforts, allows us to meet our goal of reintegrating our guests back into the community… ending homelessness one person at a time, allowing our guest to find a plaace to call home.

Thanks again for your generosity; blessings on your work and efforts.

Many thanks,

Dear Ms. Shore:
The 17th Annual Knock Your Sauce Off event was a remarkable success. This year’s event raised more than $85,000. The auction itself raised more than $10,000 thanks to generous friends like you woh kindly donated wonderful items.

As you know, the dollars raised for research have an immediate and significant impact on the fight against cystic fibrosis (CF). The progress we have witnessed over the past 15 years has been signifiacant. Many people with CF are living longer and healthier lives. Despite that good news, we continue to lost too many young people every day, every year. The CF cure and control cannot come quick enough. Your generous donation brings us closer to our shared dream of cure and control.

Please know how much your support meanst to us. We greatly appreciate your donation and promise to invest the dollars raised as a result in the wisest way possible - to save lives.

Dear Ms. Shore:
Thank you for supporting the Old Colony Hospice Classic IV. Your donation of a gift certificate, valued at $25.00, and show of support is a terrific addition to the tournament.
On August 17, our full slate of golfers will participate in a great day at Easton Country Club. Following the tournament, golfers and organizers will enjoy dinner and the awards ceremony, in addition to our Auction/Raffle with many sought-after items.

Our goals are two-fold: To provide the players with an enjoyable day and to raise awareness of the benefits of hospice care. Special thanks to you for your donation — it will be received with enthusiasm at the event, and we will list your business as a supporter in our fall newsletter.

This year, Old Colony Hospice will provide highly skilled, compassionate care each day to 80-95 patients and their loved ones. We care for patients with compassion and dignity in their homes and at skilled nursint facilities. Dear Ms. Shore:
Thank you for your recent donation to the WEIR Corporation’s Thirteenth Annual Taunton River Festival. Your support will assist in making this fundraiser a success.

Due to the inclement weather, the WEIR Corporation had to postpoine the Festival, originally scheduled for June 3, 2006. We have rescheduled theThirteenth Annual Taunton River Festival for September 30, 2006, with a rain date of October 1.

The WEIR Corporation is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven community development corporation whose mission is to revitalize the Weir neighborhood and to assist small businesses to expand by providing financial consulting and small business loans. We are able to accomplish our goals through this fundraiser and small grants that we receive annually. Without the support of individuals, businesses, and organizations like you, it would be difficult for us to fulfill our mission.

Once again, the Board members of the WEIR Corporation and the residents and businesses in the Weir Community thank you for your participation.

Dear Naomi,
On behalf of BELL, thank you for your participation in this year’s Field of Dreams Gala. We are deeply grateful for your contribution made in support of BELL and the Red Sox Scholars Program, an innovative partnership each year providing 25 fifth-grade students the opportunity to attend college. Due to your generosity, this year’s gala raised more than $450,000 to support children in our community.

Thank you also for sharing in BELL’s mission to improve the academic achievements, self-esteem and life opportunities for children living in low-income, urban communities. It was tremendous to hear from fifth grade scholar Stephen Beskalo, Jr. speak about his dreams to become a scientist and cure diseases; and eighth grader Kourtney Lewis speak about her dreams to attend Stanford University and Harvard Law Schook and then become a criminal defense attorney.

At this year’s event, we also paid tribute to the man who helped make BELL possible by serving as its chairman and mentor to CEO Earl Martin Phalen, Professor Charles J. Ogletree. In his name, BELL presented an award to Marian Heard. It was powerful to hear Marian speak so passionately about the work we all do “for the future” — about the importance of education, of becoming involved with local organizations like BELL, and of believing in the tremendous potential within all children.

Thank you agian for attending Field of Dreams. I hope to see you again at next yer’s even. Together we are truly impacting the lives of our community’s greatest asset — children.

Peace,

Dear Ms. Shore,
On behalf of the more than 150 residents and invited guests who attended the Saugus Housing Authority’s 16th Annual Summer Picnic on Wednesday, June 28, we would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to you for your support.

In addition to the financial assistance provided by several of the local banks and civic organizations throughout Saugus which helped to defer the rising costs of putting on the Summer Picnic, all of the “door prizes” given to many of the tenant’s who attended were donated by the local business community.

Through your continued generosity, our elderly and handicapped residents were able to get together, spend some time with friends and neighbors, have a great lunch and enjoy the day’s festivities!

Once again, thank you for your support.

Dear Ms. Shore:
Thank you for your generous donation of a $25.00 gift certificate to our Third Annual Raising the Roof Auction and Food Festival. The event was a tremendous success with approximately 200 people in attendance, including local business leaders and Habitat volunteers and supporters. We raised nearly $28,000 which will be used this fall to start a new building project, allowing two more low-income families the opportunity to become homeowners.

Your continued support of Habitat for Humanity’s mission to build simple, decent homes for those in need in Central Massachusetts is graciously appreciated. More than 20 families in Central Massachusetts have already realized their dreams of home ownership through our program of “a hand up, not a hand out.” We consider you a significant asset in our quest to eliminate substandard houseng - one home and one family at a time.

With much appreciation,

Greater Nashua - Relay For Life thanks Bernie & Phyl’s.

There is no way to say “Thank You” that truly portrays how much we appreciate your support. But, we do “Thank you!”

The American Cancer Society, the Greater Nashua Relay For Life, The Playing For a Cure Team, and everyone who has had cancer or has had a family member or friend experience cancer, thanks you for your support!

The 2006 Relay For Life walk was quite differnet this year. We had a torrential downpour that seemed to be a constant this spring. But, we made some changes and had our walk. We moved inside the gym this year for the walk. This was a “first.” A little disappointing in some ways but the weather was bad and threatened to get worse before the night was finished. Better to have healthy, safe people during the walk. The committee did a wonderful job of coordinating all of the special moments of the wwalk. The 16-18 hour walk is really made up of many, many special moments.

Some of the teams backed out. They raised their money but did not participate in the walk. Not the Playing For a Cure team! We had a full team with a lot of extra help during the walk. We didn’t raise as much money as last year, but we came close.

The Luminaria walk was made extra special by the decorated bags with tiny, white lights inserted in the bottom of the bags — lined up around the inner section of they gym floor. The Boy Scouts did an incredible job of decorating, including the word “HOPE” made up of bags, lighted with the glow sticks on the upper portion of the gym. Anoyone who has the opportunity to join us for even just this part of the event, will find it moving and beautiful. A little sad but mostly inspiritng!

The Survivor lap and reception following were very well done. All survivors and family were treated to a wonderful meal supplied by Smoky Bones Restaurant. All Survivors and families were invited to this reception. You don’t need to walk. Let me know if you would like information on attending in 2007.

Next year will be our tenth year as a team, so we will be approaching you for help again. We hope to exceed all our previous efforts. Your continuted support will help us to accomplish this goal.

Think about dropping by to see what we are “all about” or better yet, think about joining our team next year. You do not have to stay the whole 16-18 hours. You can participate for an hour, several hours or whatever fits into your schedule. If you only want to help raise funds, that works too. If you know of a business or group that would like to participate, let me know. If you want someone to speak to a group, we can do that.

I hope that each of you know how much your donation of money, gift certificates, prize donations and support helps to benefit the Relay For Life Walk. your help provides funds for Research, Advocacy, Road to Recovery, Reach to Recovery, Man to Man and many other projects that the American Cancer Society covers. Again, a very big thank you!

Thank you for the encouragement as well as the tangible benefits that your donation provided for all of us who are seeking the cure. It cannot happen without you.

Bernie & Phyl’s contributes to hurricane relief

Dear Naomi Dean,
On behalf of the students and leadership of First Congregational Stdent Ministry we thank you so much for your donation to our recent “Hurricane Extravaganza” fund-raiser event. We raised just over $10,000 which will all be used to fund the clean-up efforts in the New Orleans area. Please consider yourself a partner in these efforts.

What we’re able to raise might seem small compared to the greater need. However, the impact will extend far beyond the spending of the last cent. There is no amount of money that can buy the hope that is given when people care for others in need. Your generous participation in this event will have a value far greater than simply sending a group of teenagers on a trip, it will leave a legacy.

This July, First Congregational Church of Hopkinton is sending a team of 25 high school students and adults this summer to contribute to the restoration and rebuilding effort, partnering with area churches while in New Orleans from July 15 to July 22. Projects for the team may include removing debris, cleaning damage from flooding, gutting homes damaged by flood waters and serving at local food and clothing distribution centers.

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31

Bernie & Phyl’s Furniture
Blumenthal & Assocates 101 Wolcott Road
Chestnut Hill, MA 02467

Dear Ms. Shore:
Thank you for supporting our 8th Annual “Stepping Out For Hospice” Memorial Walk. It was an amazing day - and the rain held off! Your recent donation of a gift certificate, valued at $25.00, and show of support was an important addition to our donations. I will list your business as a supporter in our Spring Newsletter.

On April 23, 2006, over 1000 people joined us at Stonehill College as we trekked through the scenic campus. This annual event is a meaningful way for our communities to join with family members and OCH staff, along with corporate and community walk teams, in raising awareness for hospice programs and services.

We are happy to report that the following goals were met:
• To raise $125,00 in support of our programs and services at Old Colony Hospice,
• To spread awareness to the public of the benefits of choosing hospice care for patients, and
• To have an enjoyable day in our community - Music, food, kids corner, raffles & awards.

This year, Old Colony Hospice will provide highly skilled, compassionate care to 80-95 patients, along with their loved ones, each day. We care for patients with compassion and dignity in private homes, as well as skilled nursing facilities. Your donation helps us bridge the gap between what we are paid by insurers and the true cost of providing care and medication during this most difficult phase of life.

Sincere thank for your involvement,
Marilyn A. Jackson
Director of Development

YMCA thanks Bernie & Phyl’s

Dear Bernie and Phyl’s Furniture,
On behalf of the 14,000+ members of the YMCA of Boroughs Family Branch we wish to express our sincere gratitude to you for your generous gift certificate for the Second Annual Spring for Yourth Charity Auction.

Thanks to your generosity the event helped raise over $15,000 for our Annual Partner with Youth Campaign. The Boroughs Family Branch is thrilled to report that they have reached their $60,000 goal! The impact of the annual campaign is significant. In 2005 the YMCA awarded $95,000 in scholarships for youth and families. These scholarships provide many opportunities for those who would otherwise be unable to participate in childcare, teen initiatives and attend summer camp. Equally exciting is the influence that many of these young people have on our community as they develop their leadership and socialization skills.
Again, many thanks for placing the YMCA Boroughs Family Branch among your charitable priorities. We look forward to working with you on the 2007 Spring for Youth Charity Auction! You truly are our partner in our mission to build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.

Without support like yours, many of the club, camping, and self reliance programs could not continue…

Dear Friend,
Thank you for your generous donation of a $25 Gift Certificate for the Camp Fire Auction. Asking people for donations is one of the most challenging jobs for the volunteers and staff here at Camp Fire. Our committee is willing to ask because they believe so wholly in what Camp Fire achieves for children, whether at a drop-in center, an after school program, or summer camp; and so we ask and hope that everyone is as generous as you. Your donation, given so freely, will be acknowledged at our auction and in our program book. The auction will be held on May 1, 2004, at the Knights of Columbus in Lynn.

The funds raised at the auction will help us achieve our mission: Camp Fire Boys and Girls builds caring, confident youth and future leaders.
Without support like yours, many of the club, camping, and self reliance programs could not continue and the children who participate through sliding fees and camperships would not be offered that assistance.

Once again, from all of us at Camp Fire, our heartfelt thanks for your support and help.

Sincerely,
Auction Committee

Our Lady of Nazareth Academy thanks Bernie & Phyl’s Furniture

Bernie & Phyl’s Furniture
308 East Main Street
Norton, MA 02766

Dear Naomi:
Our largest fundraiser of the year, ‘Cruising at the OLN Auction was held at Our Lady of Nazareth Academy on Saturday, October 25, 2003. As you recall, Our Lady of Nazareth Academy is a non-profit, independent Catholic All-Girls High School established in 1949 located in Wakefield, MA. Our Lady of Nazareth Academy receives NO financial support from the Archdiocese of Boston, local or state tax revenues. It exists solely on tuitions/donations and fundraising which directly benefits our students and school.

Even in a year with a depressed economy, uncertainty in world markets, and war in our world; with your generous donation and support, this year’s “Cruise themed” Auction was a most successful event. We raised $44,000! After expenses, $40,000 will be returned to the school to continue to meet educational and activity expenses for the 2002-2003 school year.

The event was well publicized throughout the OLN family and to news media outlet in the 30 communities that send students to the Academy. . Your donation was recognized in our auction program and hopefully families and friends of the Academy will support and patronize your business.

Once again, thank you for your support of Our Lady of Nazareth Academy. We are most grateful and blessed to have your help in the education of our young women of the future.

Sincerely,

Your kindness is greatly appreciated…

Dear Friend.
We are well on our way to making our dream of assisting deserving students in their educational pursuits a reality. Last year, we awarded 13 scholarships to graduating high school seniors from around the Merrimack Valley. Now, thanks to people like you we will be able to continue our scholarship fund this year and. hopefully, for many years to come. We at the The Stacy Stott Memorial Fund would like to thank you for your generous donation this year. Whether your donation was in the form of cash, a gift certificate or items used to run our 2nd Annual benefit, your kindness is greatly appreciated.

As you may recall from previous correspondences, Stacy was a vibrant, beautiful, young woman whose life was cut tragically short in an automobile accident. She was a well- rounded individual who possessed an extraordinary amount of dedication, leadership, and spirit. She was kind to others and was an inspiration to many. She affected hundreds of people in her short lifetime. It is our continued goal to ensure that her legacy be carried on to touch the lives of others for many years to come.
The Stacy Stott Memorial Fund will continue to award scholarships to graduating seniors Andover High School, Chelmsford High School, Dracut High School, Greater Lowell vocational Technical High School, Lowell Catholic High School. Lowell High School. Methuen High School, Tewksbury High School, and Celebrity All Stars. In addition donations have and will be made to the Lowell High School dance program in an effort to sustain this program for Lowell High School students.

Recipients of the first annual scholarships illustrated some of the characteristics that defined Stacy: motivation, dedication to education and extra-curricular activities, leadership skills, and a desire to make a difference in the lives of others. We will continue to reward young adults who possess these valued characteristics.

Please accept our warmest thanks for your assistance in helping us continue the legacy of spirit and kindness that Stacy began in her lifetime.

Sincerely,
The Senior Sport Memorial Fund Committee

Please allow to express my gratitude towards you & Bernie Phyl’s for the generous donation to our Essex Base Ball Club fund-raiser raffle.

Dear Troop 20 Supporter:
On behalf of Boy Scout Troop 20 of Hudson, NH, we would like to thank you for making our fundraiser a huge success. Because of your generous donation, we were able to raise enough money to support many of the activities that the boys want to do throughout the year as well as fund programs, such as our campership program, which helps scouts attend camp who otherwise could not afford to go.

Our spaghetti supper/silent auction was well attended by the community where we served over 40 pounds of pasta and meatballs each. The auction and penny sale added a touch of excitement to the evening.

Thank you again for supporting Troop 20, the scouts appreciate it.

Bernie & Phyl’s donates to Hospice benefit

Ms. Naomi Shore
Public Relations Coordinator
Bernie & Phyl’s
308 E Main Street
Norton, MA 02766

Dear Ms. Shore:
Thank you for supporting the 15? Annual Walk for Hospice. Your generous gift-in-kind donation of a gift certificate, which you valued at $25.00, sends a clear message to our patients, their families, and Hospice caregivers that you, too, care about human dignity and compassion.

The Walk raises funds so that Hospice of the South Shore can provide special care for terminally ill patients and their families during a sensitive and important time of life. A team of caring professionals teaches family members how to comfort and care for their loved one and for each other. Hospice also offers bereavement counseling for children, siblings, parents, and friends. All of these services are provided regardless of the patient’s or family’s ability to pay.

The Walk is a very public expression of this love and appreciation, as you can see from these remembrances placed on the Wall of Memories:
“Angels are surely here on earth in the loving form of Hospice workers! Love & Thanks.”
“It’s been 16 years since I lost my mother to cancer, but the pleasant memories of her Hospice nurses are still fresh in my mind.Thank You. ”

This is why your support is so appreciated.

The IRS asks that we tell you that no goods or services were provided in exchange for this donation.
On behalf of our Hospice patients and their families, thank you for sponsoring this important local cause.

Sincerely,
Edith Millard
Philanthropy Officer

308 E.Main Street
Norton, MA 02766

Dear Ms. Shore,
Simple thanks are not enough for the tremendous outpouring of giving we witnessed at our “Renew Our Heritage” Auction, on Friday, November 18! One of the most successful fundraisers ever for the Academy of Notre Dame, the evening proved, once again, that parents, alumnae and extended members of the NDA family have not forgotten what our beloved Academy stands for: a shining example of academic excellence.

At NDA, no child is ever left behind-and thanks to your exemplary generosity their future now holds even more promise. You can be sure that many students will benefit from your open hearts and quietly thank you for giving them “The NDA Advantage.” But, the real measure of your success will be how your “heritage” of giving inspires these same students to continue this tradition of support to The Academy-just as many of you have.

Though one can never truly put a number on generosity, we thought you would be pleased to know that we anticipate raising $60,000 from the auction.

These exceptional numbers speak for themselves.

May the blessings of the Christmas season be with you and those you hold dear.

Gratefully,

Veteran’s Day Tribute to the Troops
Your donation of gift certificates really helped

Bernie & Phyl’s
Naomi Shore

Dear Naomi,
THANK YOU!!!!
We now plan to distribute close to 50 scholarships of $500 each to Massachusetts’ service members. Your donation of gift certificates really helped. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all your hard work and your generous donations. The numbers speak for themselves. The proceeds are well over our anticipated goals.

As I said on Veteran’s Day Friday November 11th at the Tribute to the Troops Event at Florian Hall in Dorchester, this event was not about the war, either for or against the war, but rather it was about our Service Members, their families, and their education needs.

Our success cannot be attributed to any one person or organization. It was the combination of many special people - either in a group or individually - working collectively toward a common goal of raising funds for service members and their families for their educational goals. The effort started over 3 months ago and really paid off.

One Service Member, Specialist Brendan J. Murphy of Dorchester (my brother), was able to express his appreciation of all our efforts through a live telephone call from Iraq to a crowd of over 400 hundred during the event. Brendan thanked all for sending packages and supporting our troops away from home. May Brendan and all our service members return home safely.

Thank you again and God Bless our Troops,

Sincerely,
Jimmy Murphy

Chestnut Hill, MA 02467

Dear Ms. Shore:
Special thanks to you for donating a gift certificate valued at $25.00. This gift will be a terrific auction item at this year’s “Friends of Hospice” Annual Gala.

The theme for this year’s event will celebrate the founding of Old Colony Hospice twenty-six years ago -we are so proud of that. We plan another very worthwhile evening - scrumptious dining, auction of a few select items and dancing a1 the Blue Hill Country Club in Canton on October 21,2005.

Honoring some special supporters and enjoying the message of Dr. Ned Cassem, a colleague of the founder of the hospice movement in our country, plus our guest celebrity, Harvey Leonard, WCVB-TV Meteorologist, will complete our event!
As a supporter, Bernie & Phyl’s Furniture will be promoted in our program book for the event and will be listed in the 2006 Report of Gifts.

Since 1979, Old Colony Hospice has provided compassionate, expert medical care and programs that focus on body, mind, and spirit - with an understanding that serious illness profoundly impacts the patient as well as family and friends. Teams of health care professionals will serve 80-95 patients each day, plus their families, regardless of their ability to pay. This makes it critically important for us to raise money through sponsorships.

Thanks for your role in our evening –
